About this Katsura

This tree is one of two members of the single genus in the family Cercidiphyllaceae. A native of Japan and China, it is grown in the West largely for ornamental purposes, although in western China many pharmacies sell the tree’s bark for its medicinal properties.

This deciduous tree is relatively long-lived, and in optimum conditions can grow over the course of hundreds of years into a magnificent specimen up to 45 m in height. Its flowers are relatively insignificant, and it is grown for its attractive foliage, with heart-shaped leaves which flush pink, yellow and orange through the spring months. It is at its most spectacular in autumn when the rich colours of its leaves are impressively vivid, before they die off to leave a sweet caramel/candyfloss scent in their wake.
