About this European Beech
European beech is a large forest tree native across much of Europe. Although widespread in Scotland, and regenerating freely here, it is an introduced tree in northern Britain. The eastern limit of the species is northwest Turkey where it intergrades with the closely related oriental beech.
Beech produces a versatile timber used for a variety of uses as it has a fine grain and is easily worked. It can be bent into shape by steaming and accepts varnish and glues well. Consequently, beech is particularly favoured for furniture making and as a material for wooden tools. It is also one of the best woods for making fires.
