About this Field Maple

Known as the field maple, this small tree is a native relative of the more familiar introduced sycamore. It has the typical paired winged seeds that spiral to the ground in autumn at a time when the foliage can turn a brilliant yellow. Field maple is native to Scotland, although it is at the edge of its natural range here and is less common than in southern Britain.

In common with other maple species the wood of this tree is white, hard and strong and has specific uses in turning, furniture making and musical instruments. Many named forms of this tree are encountered in gardens and its relatively small attractive leaves have made it is a popular choice for growers of bonsai trees.
