About this Copper Beech

Copper beech is a cultivated form of the European beech that has been selected for attractive red/purple foliage due to the presence of high levels of the pigment anthocyanin. Several named forms are propagated by grafting to maintain their colour, which would show considerable variation in seedlings.

Copper beech is popular as a specimen tree in large gardens and parks where its dark foliage stands out against other trees. Purple-leaved variants are sporadically produced in many different tree species and such individuals have often been propagated for their novelty and beauty. This is the origin of the various forms of copper beech.
