Whilst the Woolly Willow is common across Arctic regions, it is one of the rarest native willows in Scotland, historically reduced to small, isolated populations in the Scottish Highlands. It is now of key conservation concern, and efforts to bring the Woolly Willow back to a sustainable population size are being actively reintroduced by organisations like the RBGE. Like many willows, it contains salicin, a natural compound that helped lead to the development of aspirin.
