Scots Pine, Charlotte Cowan Pearson

Scots Pine

giuthas-Albannach / Pinus sylvestris

Scots Pine is Scotland's national tree and the only pine native to the United Kingdom. It is a light-demanding species that thrives in poor, acidic and well-drained soils, historically prized for its durability, making it an essential material for shipbuilding and construction. In the remnants of the ancient Caledonian Forest, Scots Pine supports over 170 species important for the protection of British wildlife such as the red squirrel, capercaillie and Scottish crossbill. Scots Pine are incredibly hardy and can live for up to 700 years.
