Celebrating 350 years
Established in 1670 as a physic garden near the Palace of Holyroodhouse, in 2020 the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh will celebrate its 350th anniversary with a year-long programme of talks, events and exhibitions. We invite you to join us in our celebrations.
Throughout 2020, we will celebrate the scientific and horticultural achievements of the past 350 years, tracing our progress from 17th century physic garden to world-leading botanic garden.
However, 2020 won’t just be about the glories of the past. In our anniversary year, we will show how the current work of the RBGE continues to explore, conserve and explain the world of plants in the face of climate change, and how our ambitious plans will help to future-proof the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh for the 21st century and beyond.
Please join our celebrations throughout our anniversary year. We also invite you – staff, students, friends and patrons, visitors and the local community – to share your memories of the Botanics with us.

In our 350th year, we are delighted to be working with many partner organisations throughout Scotland, the UK and internationally.
