Green Dawyck
Discover how Dawyck puts sustainability into action
-
Dawyck Botanic Garden is recognised as the first carbon‑neutral botanic garden in the UK and continues to lead the way in environmental sustainability.
The Garden’s hydro‑electric scheme, powered by the Scrape Burn, generates enough renewable electricity to run the Visitor Centre, with any surplus supplied back to the national grid.
Dawyck also holds a Gold Award for Green Tourism Environmental Management, reflecting its long‑standing commitment to responsible stewardship.
Sustainability features across the site include:
-
A green roof on the Visitor Centre, supporting biodiversity and improving insulation
-
Biomass heating, providing an efficient and renewable heat source
-
A strong focus on recycling and encouraging environmentally responsible behaviour among visitors
By combining historic landscape management with modern sustainable technologies, Dawyck demonstrates how botanic gardens can operate responsibly while protecting and celebrating Scotland’s natural heritage.
