Taxonomy Day 2026
This conference day covers key areas across a variety of topics from Advanced Higher (AH) and Higher Biology, with a focus on relating taxonomy to current biological understanding. Topics include:
- The tree of life classification
- Taxonomic groupings
- Divergent and convergent evolution
- Model organisms
- How genetic information is changing classification
Pupils will have the opportunity to explore plant ID, learn about the collection and preservation of specimens, how “new” species are named and visit the glasshouses as well as attending lectures. Pupils leave knowing more about the conservation role of Botanical Gardens and why taxonomy matters.
Taxonomy Day is for Advanced Higher Biology learners. Although, it may also be of interest to motivated Higher Biology pupils.
Taxonomy Day will be on the 21st of October 2026, from 9:30 - 14:30.
The event will be based at 20a Inverleith Row, EH3 5LR.
