Based in Hong Kong and currently working in a herbarium as a specimen collector. I enjoy recording plants in Hong Kong by collecting specimens and taking photos.

I learned about botanical illustration while volunteering in a university herbarium during my studies and found that it was a perfect way to combine my interest in plants with illustration, a long‑forgotten childhood hobby.

Wishing to receive formal training, I took the Certificate course and then the Diploma in Botanical Illustration provided by the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh in 2020 and 2023, respectively.

My favourite plant families are Poaceae and Cyperaceae.

Title of the project

Five Carex species in Hong Kong

About the project

Carex is a large genus consisting of more than 2,000 species worldwide and more than 500 species in China. According to Flora of China (2010), species in China are divided into three subgenera and 69 sections.

In Hong Kong, we have 29 Carex species belonging to two subgenera and 15 sections.

I hope to provide a glimpse of the beauty and diversity of Carex in Hong Kong. Therefore, five species were chosen from both subgenera and five sections.

They all have unique and interesting inflorescence structures, utricles and nutlets. Some of them even live in very different habitats.
