Title of the project

Coastal plants of the Adriatic

About the project

These five halophytes (salt tolerant plants) are native to the Italian Adriatic coast. Four are saltmarsh plants and one is a seagrass.

These plants play the important role of literally holding the soil together, helping to resist storm surges at the coast while also providing important habitat for migratory birds and marine life.

It is estimated that up to 80% of the saltmarshes and 50% of seagrasses in Italy have been destroyed to make way for human settlements and activities.
