Emma has been interested in Botanical Illustration for a number of years and completed the online RBGE Certificate in Botanical Illustration in 2021.

She decided to continue with her studies in this area and was delighted to be accepted on to the RBGE Diploma in 2023.

She aims to combine the scientific nature of Botanical Illustration whilst attempting to display information in a creative manner. She strives to capture the delicate and complex nature of plants through close observation.

Title of the project

Inspiration from 16th Century Flowering Plants

About the project

With an interest in historic buildings, I was naturally drawn to wondering what plants may have been grown, displayed and enjoyed in 16th Century gardens.  If I could step back in time, would there be any plants that I could recognise?

The plants that I have selected for my five paintings are not only inspirational to me through their intrinsic beauty, colour and complex nature, but are also recognisable in today's world and that of the 16th Century.

My plant choices have distinctly different forms from one another, they appear visually striking and are all now growing in my garden.
