Jenni is passionate about visual arts and the world of plants, and since botanical illustration and art are ways to combine these passions very beautifully, it was natural, that she wanted to learn this method of studying plants visually and making art from them.

As an artist, Jenni works with various media, including but not limited to acrylics, watercolour, graphite and mixed media – but the subjects and themes of her art centre mostly on botanical motifs. At the moment she is particularly fascinated by orchids – their flowers’ beauty, botany, ecology, cultivation and cultural history – and she is currently working on several art projects focusing on orchids.

Jenni works and lives in Helsinki, Finland.

Title of the project

Horticultural Epidendroideae Orchid Hybrids

About the project

This project centres on horticultural orchid hybrids belonging to the orchid subfamily Epidendroideae. Orchidaceae, the orchid family, contains about 28,000 species and well over 100,000 human-made hybrids, and the purpose of this project was to shed light on the variety of these orchids by studying and painting five different cultivated hybrids.

This project also acts as a way to ponder human-plant relationships and interaction more generally. In addition to careful botanical observation and research, this project shows some examples of the many artistic choices a botanical artist must make, including compositions and media used.
