Report on Board Gender Diversity

August 2025

RBGE is actively committed to ensuring that all our staff, trustees, volunteers, students, and visitors are treated equally irrespective of their sex, marital status, age, race, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, disability, religion or social background, any pregnancy or maternity, gender reassignment, or marriage / civil partnership status in accordance with the Equalities Act 2010. We are additionally committed to the Scottish Government’s gender representation objective that public sector Boards comprise 50% women, under the terms of the Gender Representation on public boards Scotland Act (2018).

Our Board of Trustees is ordinarily made up of nine members appointed for four yearly terms by Scottish Ministers via the Public Appointments process. In December 2021, we reported that we aspired to improve the gender balance of the Board, and as a result by June 2023 our Board was comprised of six women and three men (including the Chair) and met the objective of the Act. At the time of writing our Board has five women and two men, with two more Trustees about to be appointed. We will continue to work towards maintaining the gender balance as and when future appointments are made.

In terms of other aspects of Board diversity, we acknowledge a predominance of white Trustees and are committed to working with the Scottish Government on future appointments to achieve a Board that is representative of Scotland’s ethnic/racial diversity.
