About the Biodiversity Skills Centre
Our purpose is to share the collections and expertise of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh to help build a global capacity for biodiversity conservation. We provide professional training, academic programmes, and capacity building services to enhance the ability of conservation practitioners to cultivate, conserve, and sustainably use plants.
The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh will make an impactful contribution to global biodiversity conservation by sharing knowledge and skills with conservation practitioners worldwide. Our teaching, training, and partnerships will empower a global capacity for biodiversity conservation. We will harness the potential of learning technology to create an international learning community and provide international leadership in advancing biodiversity conservation.
The Learning and Engagement Strategy 2025 - 2030 provides a framework for biodiversity education and training at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. It outlines our collective aspirations for learning and engagement. The Biodiversity Skills Centre plays a crucial role in the Strategy, aiming to develop an international learning community and a global capacity for biodiversity conservation.

Nature-Positive Amenity Grasslands
In collaboration with NatureScot, we have developed a new online course that emphasises nature-positive practices for managing and maintaining amenity grasslands, including parks and greenspaces. In this course, you will learn how changes in management practices can promote flowering plants, support pollinators, and foster resilient ecosystems.

International Congress on Education in Botanic Gardens
Graham Young and Will Ritchie from the Biodiversity Education and Training team attended the International Congress on Education in Botanic Gardens last week. The event, hosted by the Korea National Arboretum and Botanic Garden Conservation International (BGCI), took place in Seoul, South Korea. Both Graham and Will participated in presentations, panel discussions, and workshops to showcase the work of the Botanics.
Will commented, “The Congress was an excellent opportunity to learn from other botanic gardens and share our efforts to address the biodiversity skills gap. We had many productive discussions about potential collaborations and knowledge sharing. The goodwill toward the Botanics was noteworthy, with many delegates speaking highly of our work and the generosity of our staff. Graham Young delivered a great presentation on our approach to online learning, demonstrating that we are leading the way in the use of learning technologies within the botanic garden community.”
