World Flora Online

WFO is an open-access, online compendium of the world's plant species supported by the global taxonomic community. RBGE plays leading roles in WFO, particularly in the development of the WFO consensus classification and supporting infrastructure (social and technical).

We have a leading role in the international community which is building, maintaining, and promoting the WFO, especially in the running and development of the WFO organisation and its website. In particular, we are responsible for the WFO Plant List, where we produce the technical infrastructure, and manage and contribute to the Taxonomic Expert Networks (TENs) which curate the consensus classification. The WFO Plant List aims to be the single most authoritative data source for accepted plant names - a global consensus classification. It forms the taxonomic backbone for floristic data in the WFO portal, and is used by other projects critical to addressing the biodiversity crisis, including the Catalogue of Life, GBIF and global ecological monitoring.
