Biodiversity Genomics Europe

Contributing to a new era of genomics for biodiversity through the pan-European BGE project.

Biodiversity Genomics Europe (BGE) is building synergies within and between the DNA barcoding and genome sequencing communities across Europe, in order to accelerate the use of genomic science to tackle the biodiversity crisis.

This project is laying the foundations for a massive upscaling in biodiversity research capacity through the development of European science networks and the co-ordinated delivery of DNA-barcoding and genome sequencing data.

BGE is running from September 2022 to February 2026 and involves 33 institutes from 20 countries. RBGE coordinates the DNA barcoding activities, including the development of iBOL Europe, a newly formed European node of International Barcode of Life.

We also carry out research at the interface between DNA barcoding and genome sequencing, to address the challenges of DNA-based identifications of plants. In addition, RBGE plays a key role in the communication, dissemination and exploitation of results from across the BGE consortium.
