Dinosaur sets up home at Logan
-
A life-size dinosaur is set to wow visitors at Logan Botanic Garden, near Stranraer this summer.
The imposing model of the pre-historic reptile has been created by Trevor Leat, one of the foremost willow sculptors in the UK with support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery.
The five metre high (16ft) sculpture of a Tyrannosaurus Rex is part of the Garden’s golden anniversary celebrations highlighting the specialist collection of southern hemisphere plants and the uniqueness of ‘Scotland’s most exotic Garden’.
Garden Curator, Richard Baines said: "Successful gardens are based around creativity, innovation and long term vision. The addition of the life-size dinosaur, “Loganosaurus rex’’ creates an amazing focal point in the Garden.
“The dinosaur should feel very much at home as it is located amongst giant tree ferns that would have been growing during the Jurassic period. It is a fun addition especially for kids and the installation, part of our 50th anniversary celebrations, highlights the fact that gardens are for all, both young and old".
Explaining how he created the T. rex, Trevor said: “I used varieties of willow that I grow here in Galloway. First I fabricated a steel rod armature over which I wove layers of willow to create form and movement. It took around a week to complete and was transported the 60 miles from my workshop to Logan by lorry.’’
Trevor has previously been commissioned to make a wide range of animal sculptures, including a minotaur, Asian elephant and a Gruffalo – but it is his first dinosaur creation.
