Walk - Benmore Fernery 10 Years On
The Benmore Fernery is a unique building in a remarkable setting. It was constructed in the early 1870s at the height of the Victorian fern craze by James Duncan, then owner of the estate, but went into decline in the early 20th century and lay derelict for nearly 100 years. With the support of the Younger (Benmore) Trust, the Heritage Lottery Fund and a very successful appeal to RBGE Members, reconstruction work began in 2008, and the official re-opening took place on 8th September 2009. Join Professor Mary Gibby, retired Director of Science, RBGE and Michael Thornley, MAST Architects as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Benmore Fernery.
