James Duncan Talk with Dr Andrew M Watson
James Duncan: Laird of Benmore, 1870-1889 will tell the story of an extraordinary individual and how he made his fortune, enabling him to buy Benmore estate, which became the focus of a range of pioneering and public-minded agricultural, arboricultural and artistic projects. These included planting 6 million trees and gathering examples of plants, ferns and paintings from around the world to fill gardens, fernery and an immense picture gallery. Benmore attracted notable figures from the fields of art, science, politics and religion, as well as thousands of visitors who flocked through the Golden Gates to discover Benmore’s treasures. It is from a close confidant of Duncan’s that we learn why Duncan’s great vision of leaving Benmore to the nation was never realised in his lifetime.
Dr Andrew M. Watson is an independent art historian specialising in 19th-century British collecting of French art. He has written and lectured widely, with publications for the Louvre, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and The Burlington Magazine and talks for the Burrell and Wallace collections, the Kelvingrove, National Gallery of Scotland and Brussels National Museum.
In 2000 he began his research into a certain, elusive 19th-century figure, James Duncan, sugar beet refiner, philanthropist and art collector, resulting in the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh publication James Duncan an Enlightened Victorian.
