Berries with ‘The Blues’

Dr Susan Callum with blueberries in field trials

Dr Susan McCallum with blueberries in field trials designed to test the qualities of plants created by the JHI blueberry breeding programme.

Blueberries are a familiar sight on supermarket shelves. The modern crop is derived from North American ancestors, and the US and Canada remain the largest producers of blueberries.

Due to climatic differences the blueberry varieties that are now widely cultivated are not all suited to being grown in Scotland. Dr Susan McCallum at the James Hutton Institute (JHI), in Scotland, is working to develop new varieties better suited to Scottish conditions with the help of the closely related native Scottish blaeberry.
