Samantha Comer (2019)
Since 14th December 2019, the Botanic Gardens has become my favourite spot in the whole of Edinburgh. Saturday 14th December 2019 marked my first visit to the Botanic Gardens. I had wanted to visit for years but just never seemed to get round to it. However, when tickets for Christmas at the Botanics went on sale, I knew I had to go! Christmas is my favourite time of year and I knew the experience would be special. I booked the tickets months in advance - I think it was the start of September. I had told my partner about saving the date in his diary and we could make a day of it. The week before our visit, I was getting so excited about coming. My partner, Euan, had gone out in the afternoon for his work Christmas party but had been acting a little strange all week. He had asked me what I thought he should wear for our visit and whether or not he should shave!!! At the time I was like "you never ask me these questions!". We finally got to the Gardens and started our wander around, I was taking everything in and absolutely loving every second of it, it was so beautiful. We got to the big light up love heart and people were having their photograph taken underneath it. Euan asked if I wanted to have our photo taken underneath the heart but we decided just to take our own selfie!! We then arrived at the light up boats and I was so in awe of the light show. At the little trucks that were selling hot drinks. I got a mulled wine and Euan got a hot whisky and we then headed to the marshmallows truck where we roasted marshmallows over the firepit. We then stood by the huge Christmas tree draped in beautiful fairy lights which you could see from the start of the Gardens, it was so amazing and we had kept pointing it out from afar. Euan had taken my photo in front of the tree, and then asked this family if they would mind taking our photo together in front of the tree, which they so kindly did. Just as the gentleman went to hand the phone back to Euan, Euan asked if he would mind taking another photo because he "had a very special question to ask"... I froze on the spot. Euan then got down on one knee, pulled out a ring and asked me to marry him!!! I was clutching my mulled wine, crying my eyes out, with loads of people around us clapping and cheering. Of course I said yes! One person asked how I managed to keep hold of my "hot chocolate", I told them it was mulled wine and in no way was I wasting it! It was the most incredible moment of my life and I will cherish those memories forever. I wanted to share them with you as part of your anniversary celebrations, so I hope you enjoyed reading! This is why the Gardens will always be my favourite place in Edinburgh.
