The graceful drooping form of the silver birch is recognised in its Latin name ‘pendula’. It has also accorded it the title Queen of the woods.
It was one of the first tree species to re-colonise the landscape after the Ice Age and is the species that defines upland areas.
Not a durable timber, birch has nonetheless been extensively exploited to make minor household utensils.
