About this Alder
Alder is a pioneer tree of wet places, helping to stabilise river banks.
In addition to pendulous male catkins, this tree has distinctive clusters of female catkins which ripen to brown cone-like fruits.
Alder is a pioneer tree of wet places, helping to stabilise river banks. The wood is rot resistant and was traditionally used to make clogs.
In ancient times it was used to build the base of small artificial islands (crannogs) for protected dwellings in the shallow waters of Scottish lochs.
