This year’s competition raised £732 for RBGE’s Small Project Fund and entries were of an exceptionally high standard, so congratulations to everyone who participated. The judges, everyone in the Membership Office and the RBGE Friends Committee, who organised and ran the competition, would like to thank everyone who entered the competition.
Overall winner Alan Pyke explained: “There's always something that catches the imagination no matter the season,” he said. “I'm drawn to speckled light. So, when I saw a leaf back-lit by a ray of sunlight, I walked over. There was an ant running across it and the little silhouette stood out against the vivid back-lit colours.”
James Ratchford took his prize-winning Wildlife in the Garden picture in Edinburgh’s Demonstration Garden. “It was impossible not to notice the lively insects buzzing around the wildflowers and I spent some time waiting for them to rest long enough to get a focused picture. There are so many things that I love about the Gardens, the quiet and calm atmosphere seems so far from the city.”
The winning photographs appeared in the Scotsman newspaper on Monday 16 September 2013 and will also appear in the Winter edition of the Botanics magazine which is delivered free to Friends, Companions and Patrons of the Botanics.
Andy O’Brien, Picture Editor at The Scotsman, will present the winners with their prizes at an award ceremony which will be followed by a lecture from Chris Minty from the RBGE's Centre for Middle Eastern Plants.
Details of the event can be found here
The winning photographs will be on show in the RBGE Library Foyer, weekdays from November 5 to December 2. Next year it will travel to the Regionals at Dawyck, Logan, in Dumfries & Galloway and Benmore, near Dunoon, in Argyll.
