Tapestry Inspired by the Garden

Papermaking with Plants

The garden is the inspiration for this programme, so we will be using flowers, leaves, seeds, stems and natural dyes from the plants grown both at Edinburgh Botanics and in the artist’s garden to make distinctive and unique papers.

Looking Through their Eye

Learn how to view and draw nature through the eyes of six great artists; Bonnard, Cezanne, Georgia O’Keefe, Matisse, Monet and Van Gogh. Each week we will look at the work of one artist to discuss and learn from their personal artistic interpretations.

Ciara Phillips and Nature Printed

The first major exhibition by the Canadian born artist Ciara Phillips (b. 1976, Ottawa) gaining international recognition for her use of printmaking (on paper and fabric) which she uses as her primary medium. Nature Printed is the first exhibition devoted to the Garden’s collection of nature-printed books, which is one of the world’s finest: the exhibition contains plates made by Henry Bradbury (1832-1860) which have recently been conserved by the Garden’s library archive and are being exhibited here for the first time.

Natural Dyeing

This practical workshop gives you the opportunity to “dabble in dyes” and build up a selection of samples of both yarns and fi bres. You will learn about the plants and processes to use and enjoy experimenting.

Calligraphy Workshop

Finish off your botanical painting with a beautiful handwritten title. Learn the basics of Modern Italic Script on this one-day workshop with calligrapher Michael Ashley.

Simple Art of Meditation

This one-day workshop is designed for all those interested in working with the mind in a clear and relaxed way. Where better to do this than within the calming ambience of the Botanics.

Complex Forms - Sharon Tingey

This course will take you on a journey through the drawing of crazy structures such as pine cones, seeds and other complex forms. We will learn to mix beautiful rich browns with reds and ochre’s, layering colours to create real three dimensional forms.

Digital Plant Photography I

Learn how to get the most out of your digital camera and discover the advantages of taking plant photographs digitally. This introductory course will teach you how to use your camera for the best results. It also includes ways of presenting your images.
