The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) in conjunction with the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) are running a 2-day Seasearch Seaweed Identification Course based at Eyemouth, Scotland, on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th June 2014. The course is open to divers and non-divers, whatever your existing level of knowledge, and aims to teach the basic biology of seaweeds, key methods of identification and collection techniques.  

Tutors:

Dr Greg Kenicer, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE): Greg is a botanist and Head of Education at RBGE. He has a long term passion for coastal flora and seaweeds, particularly their ethnobotany.  

Dr Jane Pottas, University of Hull. Interested in seaweed ecology, distribution and biodiversity. Jane has taught intertidal ecology to students of all ages, and worked for the Natural History Museum in London on projects to improve our understanding of non-native seaweeds.  

Course Programme:

  • Saturday 7th June (9.30am): Class session
  • Saturday 7th June (pm): Collecting - divers will shore dive the Gullies at Eyemouth, non-divers will collect on foot (option for snorkelling if desired)
  • Sunday 8th June (9am): Class session
  • Sunday 8th June (pm): Collecting/Surveying (“putting acquired skills into practice”)  

Class Sessions: These will be very ‘hands-on’ and include; introduction to seaweeds (types, basic biology, etc.); identification characters & keying out; collecting & pressing specimens; and conservation issues.  

Course Costs: £70 for the 2-day course, which includes room hire, class materials, course folder & handouts, tea and coffee during the day. Not included: Lunches (various cafes or shops available in Eyemouth or bring a packed lunch), overnight accommodation, tank refills if diving.
