This weekend course is suitable either as a single course to give you a briefer overview of the subject than the Introduction to Horticulture evening class, or as a stepping stone to further study such as the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture. You need no knowledge of science before you begin, but some experience of gardening will be an advantage. It will be fast-paced and informal course. In order to introduce all the important topics there will be an emphasis on classroom work and presentations. However, the second day will include some practical work and where time allows, use of the garden.

Topics covered:

  • Plant names
  • Plant growth forms and their place in the garden
  • Plant anatomy and requirements for growth
  • Soils
  • Pruning
  • Propagation techniques
  • Garden planning
