A writer, photographer, actress and political activist, Claude Cahun's remarkable legacy is a photographic archive which provides a compelling and vivid document of a most unusual life, one that despite its distance from that of a modern day viewer seems to uncannily and unflinchingly echo today's concerns. Displaying an unrelenting fascination with the presentation of identity and gender, Cahun has been appropriated as a visionary figure in the fields of feminismn, gender studies and political activism - and, as many critics and academics have noted, can be seen as a precursor to artists including Cindy Sherman, Francesca Woodman and Nan Goldin.
