Lawrence Weiner -  Time + Place

12 August - 29 October 2000

Lawrence Weiner: installation view, "Time + Place", Inverleith House, 2000.

As part of the 2000 Edinburgh International Festival, Inverleith House exhibited one of America's foremost conceptual artists. Lawrence Weiner's work deals with the philosophy of language and relies on a sparing use of familiar words and phrases that through their repetition as you read them makes the work that much more memorable and rewarding. These texts are given extra twists and a heightening of meaning by their visual impact on gallery walls. Generally concerned with our perceptions of space, Lawrence considered not only the architecture of Inverleith House but also its functions and its surrounding environment. This exhibition was unique to the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, being site specific Lawrence was invited to produce new work in the gallery. TIME + PLACE was a series of huge text pieces applied to the gallery walls using charcoal. It has been said that Weiner transforms word and language into a "poetic vision".

Based in New York, Lawrence was born in 1942 and has exhibited widely throughout the world, including Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Guggenheim and Whitney Museums in New York. His work often appears in book form, public spaces and also spoken or sung on records.

The following text was be in "Offline" font and accompanied by various symbols, which covered the several rooms of Inverleith House.
