Why does the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh have a membership programme?
Our membership programme allows visitors to help us deliver on our mission to explore and explain the world of plants for a better future. Members are kept updated on our work through the quarterly Botanics magazine, enjoy free access to our four Gardens and the Edinburgh glasshouses, receive discounts in our shops, restaurant and cafes and invitations to a busy programme of events.
Why should I become a Member?
Members are a vital part of the community at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and their support over the years has funded many scientific expeditions across the world, small projects across the Gardens and has helped to create a vibrant, welcoming environment for all our visitors.
What are the benefits of becoming a Member?
By becoming a Member you will receive free admission to the Edinburgh Glasshouses and the Gardens at Dawyck, Benmore and Logan, as well as to other Gardens with whom we have reciprocal entry agreements, including the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. There are also discounts for members in the Botanics Shops, Gateway Restaurant and Terrace Cafe, plus reduced prices for our education courses. A busy programme of events is scheduled for members and the quarterly Botanics magazine is delivered free to your door. On top of all of this, members receive a monthly e-newsletter, keeping them updated on all things happening at RBGE.
Who is joint membership for?
Joint membership is intended for two adults living together at the same address plus any children who live with them.
How do I become a Member?
You can become a Member of the Botanics in whatever way is most convenient to you:
Online - You can become a Member using our secure online payment system.
By telephone - You can call the Membership Office on 0131 552 5339 and join by credit or debit card.
By post - Fill in a membership leaflet or download the form from our webpage and send it back to us with the payment details completed.
In person - Visit any one of our Gardens across Scotland and pay in person.
Please note, paying by Direct Debit helps the Garden to put your donation to use more efficiently.
If you buy at one of our Gardens, you will be given a Temporary Membership Certificate, which can be used to redeem all membership benefits while you wait to receive your welcome pack by post.
Can I give an additional donation when I join or renew my Membership?
If you would like to offer further support to the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, you can make an additional donation when you join or renew your membership online, by telephone, by post or in person.
What is Gift Aid?
Gift Aid allows you to increase your support of the Garden at no extra cost to yourself. It is a simple scheme that allows charities like ours to recover the tax paid on donations. For every £1 you donate, we can claim an extra 25pence - all you have to do is make a Gift Aid declaration.
I have paid my membership subscription, what happens now?
Our Membership Office will post a welcome pack within 10 working days. Your welcome pack will contain your official RBGE membership card, a copy of the latest Botanics magazine and our What’s On guide with a full list of events taking place across all four Gardens.
Can I buy membership as a gift?
Yes! Whatever the occasion, a Friend, Companion, Patron or Life membership makes a unique gift for garden lovers and helps support the work of four of the most treasured Gardens in the world.
If I buy membership as a gift, will the welcome pack be sent to me or the recipient?
Some individuals prefer to receive the welcome pack themselves so that they can give it to their loved one in person, but if the recipient lives far away and you won’t see them in time for their celebration we can send it directly to them. The choice is entirely yours.
How can I change my membership?
Please call us on 0131 553 5339 to upgrade your membership. You can change from having an Individual to a Joint membership or upgrade to become a Companion or Patron.
When will my membership expire?
Your membership subscription will provide you with twelve months of membership. Memberships always expire at the end of the month, so if you purchase membership on any date in December, the subscription will last until 31 December the following year.
If I renew my membership before it expires, how will this affect my expiration date?
If you renew your membership before it expires, the new 12 month subscription will simply be added to the date of expiry. For example, if your membership expires in December, but you choose to renew early when you visit the Garden in August, your membership expiry date would remain as 31 December the following year. Alternatively, if you renew your subscription late, we will start from the month you renewed, for example, if your Membership expired in December but you renewed in March, your new expiry date would be 31 March of the next year.
What should I do if I lose my membership card?
If you misplace your membership card, please contact the Membership Office and we will be happy to issue a replacement.
How do I update my mailing address?
If you would like to change your mailing address, email address or if you have any other queries at all, please do not hesitate to contact the Membership Office on the details below.
How can I find out more about members’ events?
Members receive a What’s On guide biannually, detailing events at all four Gardens, including those exclusive to Members. We also send out a monthly members’ e-newsletter with updates on upcoming events and notices about what to look out for. Coffee mornings, day visits and the annual tour are exclusive to Members, but other events across the Gardens usually offer special discounts to Members. How else can I support the Gardens?
There are many ways you can help support the Garden at whatever level you feel comfortable with. In early 2012, many non-Members provided generous support in the wake of the storms that had caused much damage across all four sites. We also issue an annual fundraising appeal to Members, which is also open to visitors.
Our commemorative programme, Celebrate Life, allows visitors to remember the life of a loved one or celebrate a special occasion in a unique and personal way at The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. What is the Direct Debit Discount?
Paying by Direct Debit helps us make the most of your support, so from April 2013 new members will receive their first 2 months free if they pay by Direct Debit. The offer is also open to existing memberswho choose to change their payment method to Direct Debit. This is an introductory offer and the discount applies to the first year of paying by Direct Debit only. This offer does not apply to the concessionary rate of membership.
