Afghan Expedition

The slides of two Afghan expeditions in the 1960s have been databased and digitised. These will provide images of the specimens growing in the wild as well as images of the vegetation, people and buildings of the area.

Stainton Slide Collection

Nearly all of these images relate to the Himalayan region, especially Nepal. This area is a major focus of research at RBGE where we are coordinating the Flora of Nepal project.

These slides have a very high florisitic and artistic quality. Stainton also made herbarium collections, the top set of which were sent to the Natural History Museum London (BM). However, a large number of specimens were also lodged at RBGE, and approximately 500 of the slides have a related specimen. By linking the specimens and the slides, researchers are able to view the collection as a whole.
