Temporary Herbarium Specimen Digitiser

Pay Band B  - Salary circa £15,000 per annum (Pro Rata)

Applications are invited from suitably skilled candidates for a temporary Herbarium Specimen Digitiser within the internationally renowned Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.  This post is full time and will be for a period of 3 months.  Although part-time or job share applications will also be considered.

You will be required to contribute to the development of new methodologies for large scale digitising of herbarium specimens.  You will also be responsible for imaging herbarium sheets and recording both the information on each scan and work progress; locating, extracting and returning specimens to the herbarium; where necessary, marking basic information, name and geography, on herbarium folders during the extracting process.

A good knowledge of plant taxonomy; understanding of herbarium curation; capacity for meticulous and sensitive handling of delicate specimens are essential.  A degree in biological science; proficiency with SLR camera equipment; standard computing software (eg Microsoft); imaging software (eg Adobe Photoshop) are desirable.  The image capture element will demand capacity for sustained careful repetitive work and critical assessment of image quality.  You will also have the ability to work independently and be self-motivated, but also to work closely with other members of the team.

VACANCIES ROYAL BOTANIC GARDEN EDINBURGH BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Scottish Ministers are currently seeking to appoint 2 members to the Board of Trustees of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE).  The successful candidates will complement the skills of existing Trustees by adding knowledge and skills in (vacancy 1) profile raising and marketing and (vacancy 2) sustainable development and conservation. 

These appointments offer an excellent opportunity to contribute to the work of a major visitor attraction which has one of the world's most valuable scientific collections, and is a centre of excellence in botanical and horticultural science. 

Each appointment is for 4 years with a possibility of re-appointment for a further term.  Time commitment will be approximately 16 days per annum, with the majority of meetings taking place in Edinburgh.  It is non-remunerated, however, travel and subsistence costs and reasonable receipted dependant carer and childcare expenses will be reimbursed.
