Horticulture is, of course, one of our great specialities here at the Botanics. We offer the professional level HND/BSc in Horticulture with Plantsmanship as well as many workshops and short courses in horticulture give you endless ways to learn about what interests you in gardening. You can find out about forthcoming short courses and workshops below.

We also offer the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture, an internationally recognised qualification providing a broad-based understanding of horticultural techniques and plant biology, and the RBGE Certificate in Practical Horticulture, our international standard qualification that allows you to develop all the basic hands-on skills for a career in horticulture.

Moss Identification - Level 2

This workshop will include the ecology and distribution of bryophytes and the construction of keys at a bryophyte-rich field site.

Lichen Identification

An introduction to the fundamental features of lichens.

Propagation: Seed Sowing and Division

Learn how to get your garden off to a good start, sowing your seeds and learn how to increase your herbaceous stock cheaply and easily to fill in those spare gaps. Taught by John Dunn and Neil Davidson.

RBGE Certificate in Practical Horticulture (Benmore) *ILA

Our popular 10 day practical course, running at Benmore for the first time, will teach you the key skills needed for horticulture, including soil management, propagation and pruning. It is aimed at keen amateurs, students and professionals.

Growing Through Sound

Sound and music have been found to support and increase plant growth. On this one day course we will explore research in this area, discover the history of using sound and music and explore different sounds and music that support our own health and that of our plants. Taught by Suzanne Harris.

Introduction to Horticulture

A ten-week theoretical course covering a range of topics, from soil science to pruning to plant anatomy. Suitable as an overview of horticulture for absolute beginners, or as a stepping stone to the RHS (level 2) Certificate in Horticulture. Taught by Kate Hughes and other RBGE staff.

Recognising Plant Families

The ability to recognise plant families is a key skill for botanists and gardeners alike. Explore a range of common flowering plant families and the key characteristics used to identify them, including flowers, fruits and vegetative characters.

Preparing and Establishing a Lawn

Practical techniques and tips to help you prepare and establish a lawn. This workshop shows you how to carry out a range of lawn preparation and maintenance techniques. Taught by Ben Dell.
