The Wych Elm Project invites you to own a piece of furniture made from one Scotland's largest and best loved elms. There is a unique opportunity to participate in a project that will both celebrate and highlight the plight of our native elm, culminating in a major new exhibition in 2008.

If you...

  • are looking for hand-crafted furniture for your house or business
  • appreciate the beauty of hardwood timber
  • want to extend the life of one of Scotland's Heritage Trees
  • would loan the piece for a prestigious exhibition and publication

... you might consider being part of the Wych Elm Project.

Scotland's native wych elm (Ulmus glabra) is under threat from Dutch elm disease. In 2004, the Botanic Garden was forced to fell a magnificent wych elm because it had become a danger to the public. The body of the tree was perfectly sound and with the support of craftsmen and designers across the country the tree will live again as dozens of pieces of high quality furniture or sculpture. The project will document all stages of the process, from sawmill to home, for a book and film that will accompany the exhibition.
