Twenty-ten brought royal recognition for the man who has intensified the national and international profile of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh this century. Declared Her Majesty’s Botanist in Scotland in the summer, Regius Keeper Professor Stephen Blackmore was then conferred CBE in the New Year Honours list.
Since taking up post, in 1998, Stephen Blackmore has strengthened RBGE’s presence on the world stage. Yet, he has also maintained personal involvement in projects ranging from Belize to China and Indonesia, as well as supporting the wider remit of the Garden.
As news broke of his CBE, he commented: “Ultimately, botanic gardens must engage with the public in the widest sense. Thanks to the quality of the staff I am privileged to lead we can deliver not only scientific and horticultural expertise but also an extraordinary educational offer, art exhibitions and a dazzling array of family events, encouraging an understanding of why plants are integral to the way we live”.
