41 Friends enjoyed a garden tour of North Yorkshire, 4-7 July, ably led by Nicola Lowe and Caroline Pearson. Accommodation was in two excellent hotels in the pretty village of Helmsley. Travel was by train to York and then coach.
The group was fortunate with the weather – the only appreciable rain was when on the coach or being shown around a stately home!
The six gardens were all full of colour and interest, but covered a wide range of scope, challenge and expenditure. For example, the large hillside walled garden of Sleightolmedale, with one gardener, was followed by Burton Agnes Hall, with an even larger walled garden and an army of gardeners. The designers were sometimes the owners, but in two cases, Scampston, designed by Piet Oudolf, and Mount St John, Tom Stuart-Smith, both Chelsea winners, were no-expenses-spared show cases.
