Logan Delight

Logan Botanic Garden in Dumfries & Galloway has named two new, entirely home-grown rhododendron cultivars.

Rhododendron edgeworthii 'Logan Delight' (right) and 'Logan Surprise', both recently registered with the Royal Horticultural Society, are the products of hand-pollination by a staff member, David Knott, in the 1980s. Having served as Curator of Dawyck after leaving Logan, David is now Curator at Edinburgh.

Logan's Curator, Richard Baines, says: "'Logan Surprise' has very large, heavily scented white flowers with a yellow fleck, while the blooms of 'Logan Delight' boast a bright red calyx and a good scent. Both cultivars flower in early May."

'Logan Delight' and 'Logan Surprise' will be micropropagated in coming years with the hope of making them available for sale.
